A brand new crop swap starting in Mangawhai
A new community initiative is bringing people together in Mangawhai this winter, with a simple idea, share what you have, take what you need and connect with others along the way. The Mangawhai Share Table is an initiative from Sustainable Kaipara. Through winter, the group gathers on the last Saturday of each month at the covered table at Mangawhai Community Gardens. As spring and summer arrive and garden abundance grows, plans are in place to meet more frequently.

Locals are invited to arrive from 7.45am for an 8am prompt start.
Part produce swap and part community catch-up, the concept is simple. If you have extra produce, seedlings, herbs, flowers, cuttings, eggs, preserves, seeds, jars or other useful surplus from home, bring it along. If you don’t have anything to bring, come anyway. Everyone is welcome.
There is no buying or selling. The focus is on sharing to reduce waste, and distributing abundance that might otherwise go unused. Many of us know the rhythm of seasonal overflow. Too many lemons at once, herbs racing away in the garden, trays of seedlings all ready together, or a pantry shelf holding more chutney than one household could ever reasonably eat. The Share Table offers a place for those extras to be appreciated and enjoyed by others. It is also about connection. A bunch of silverbeet may come with a favourite recipe. A tomato seedling might arrive with growing tips. Someone new to the area may leave with fresh produce and a few new faces to recognise around town.
Why This Matters to us at Sustainable Kaipara
Aotearoa throws away an enormous amount of food. 2025 Ministry for the Environment report states that: more than 1.2 million tonnes of food is thrown away or wasted in New Zealand every year across the whole food chain, equivalent to 237 kilograms of waste per person. Nearly a third of the waste comes from households, with processing and food production making up the remainder, much of it perfectly edible. When food goes to waste, it’s not just the food itself that’s lost; it’s all the water, energy, and effort that went into growing it.
It’s one small but meaningful way to close the loop and move towards the kind of circular, low-waste food system that’s better for all of us.
Part of a Growing Movement Across Kaipara
We’re not the only ones doing this. Crop swaps and community share tables have been growing in popularity right across Te Tai Tokerau, and here in the Kaipara district there are others already leading the way.
Over in Ruawai, a local crop swap has been quietly building community connections and reducing waste for some time. These gatherings reflect the same spirit, that people who grow things have a natural generosity, and that our communities are stronger when we share what we have.
The Mangawhai Share Table joins this growing movement, bringing the same ethos to our corner of the district.
